Re DIY castable refractory The homebrew you are describing has no aggregate so it must be like soup. The portland cement as described all over this forum is not a refractory material. But if you insist on calling this slurry refractory then so be it I dont do things like you do

Everything in this recipe I can find cheap and local. that said I see many posts which warn ealously against using portland cement anywhere in your build. Many use refractory cement for the mix. I actually wouldnt be surprised if refractory cement simply is a premix of cement sand and fireclay
